  SHARDAPEETH, PILANI

Shardapeeth  is a majestic white marble temple built in 1959 ,dedicated to Saraswati ,the Goddess of learning . Architectural harmony   has been woven in this twentieth century modern temple. It follows the Indo –Aryan Nagara scheme of temple construction.

The temple stands on 70 pillars and has five different sections namely the Garbha Griha, Pradakshinapath, Antarala, Mandapam and Ardha Mandapam. The entire structure is built on a 7 feet high basement and is about 25000sq feet in area. The marble used is from Makrana, Rajasthan. The Shikhar above the sanctum rises upto 110 feet. All the Shikhars are crowned with kalashas made of copper, plated with gold. The unique feature of the temple is the depiction of   scientists, saints, philosophers, statesmen alongwith the Gods and Goddesses in stone carving on the columns in the periphery which speaks of the secular philosophy of the Birla Education Trust. Symbolically, it is the Goddess of learning in direct line of sight with the Clock Tower of Birla Institute of Technology and Science, with the statue of   Shri G D Birla in between completing the link.
